Lock Not Working Properly? We Repair It Rather Than Replace It

The first question is simple: will the door still lock? If it will not, call 01928 611001 now, since emergency calls are taken around the clock, every day. If it still locks, book a visit at a time that suits you. Runcorn Locksmith repairs faulty door locks, handles and door alignment across Runcorn, and tells you honestly when a repair will do the job instead of a whole new lock.

The faults people describe most are a key that is stiff or will not turn, a handle that is floppy or will not lift, a door that has dropped or sticks, and a lock that spins without catching. There is no call-out charge. If the lock is truly beyond saving, our lock replacement page explains the next step.

Is It the Lock, or Is It the Door?

A door that has become hard to lock has not necessarily got a broken lock: hinges, keeps or the way the door hangs in its frame can all be to blame, and the cause should be found before any part is swapped. There is a quick check you can do yourself first. Open the door fully, and with it standing open, turn the key and work the handle gently, without forcing either.

If the lock works fine with the door open

If the key turns easily and the handle moves freely once the door is open, the lock itself is very probably fine. What has changed is the fit: the door has dropped, the hinges have shifted, or a keep or strike plate has moved out of position, so the bolts no longer meet their slots. That calls for an alignment adjustment, not a new lock, and it is normally the cheaper of the two outcomes. See door, handle and alignment repairs below.

If the lock still fails with the door open

If the key still sticks, or the bolts refuse to throw even with nothing in the way, the fault is inside the lock. A worn cylinder, a tired latch spring or a broken gearbox in a multipoint mechanism are the usual suspects. Adjusting the hinges will not cure any of these: the failed component needs repairing or replacing. For full part changes see lock replacement; for gearbox and strip faults.

Common Lock and Door Faults We Repair

Most people do not ring about a "mechanism failure"; they ring because the lock is busted, broken or simply not behaving. Here are the five faults we hear about most, in plain terms, so you can recognise yours before you call.

01

The key is stiff or will not turn

A stiff key can come from grit or wear inside the cylinder, a worn key, an internal fault, or a door pressing on its locking points. Do not force it. A stiff lock rarely improves on its own. For a quick fix, a dry graphite lubricant beats WD40, which cleans and displaces water rather than lubricating and can draw dirt into the cylinder. A short inspection shows whether adjustment, repair or a new part is needed. If the key is jammed, see key stuck in the lock.

02

The handle is floppy or will not lift

On uPVC and composite doors, a handle that lifts without throwing the bolts usually points to a gearbox that has failed or is on its way out. A handle that wobbles may just need its spindle or fixings sorting. Keep forcing it and a repair turns into a replacement.

03

The door has dropped, sticks or will not close

When a door no longer sits square in its frame, the latch or locking points miss their keeps and you find yourself shoving or lifting it to lock up. Heavy composite doors and older uPVC doors are prone to it as hinges wear or the building settles. It is an alignment repair, explained in the next section.

04

The lock turns freely without locking

If the key spins but nothing engages, the cylinder cam or the link between cylinder and mechanism has given way. The door can look locked when it is not. Treat this as a security problem rather than a nuisance and do not leave it: call 01928 611001, or see lock replacement if the part cannot be saved.

05

The lock is broken or has been forced

A lock damaged in an attempted break-in, or one where a component has simply failed outright, needs more than a look at the lock. Forcing spreads strain through the door and frame, so both are checked as well. See burglary repairs, or emergency boarding up if the door cannot be secured.

Door, Handle and Alignment Repairs

A surprising number of lock problems are door problems in disguise. Hinges wear, fittings work loose, keeps end up in slightly the wrong place, and a door that no longer hangs true leans on its locking system every time it is closed. The lock is then doing extra work it was never meant to do. Typical signs are:

  • the key turns easily when the door is open but is hard work once it is shut
  • the handle has become heavier to lift than it used to be
  • you have to push or pull the door before it will lock
  • the latch or locking points catch roughly instead of sliding home

The fix is skilled adjustment rather than new parts. The work covers:

  • adjusting hinges, including the flag hinges on uPVC doors, which can be raised, lowered and moved sideways
  • repositioning keep plates so the locking points line up properly
  • replacing hinges that have worn beyond adjustment
  • refitting or replacing loose handles and spindles
  • correcting doors that have dropped or warped, which on glazed uPVC doors can mean "toe and heeling": re-packing the glass panel at opposite corners so the door is held square in its frame

A door that shuts but does not lock cleanly is a security problem, not just an irritation. If the locking points are only half engaging, the door is not as secure as it looks. Describe what the door is doing on 01928 611001 and you will be told whether it sounds like an adjustment or a part.

Why Forcing a Sticking Lock Costs You More

When a key gets hard to turn or a handle starts to feel heavy, the natural response is to push a bit harder. That extra force loads the key, the cylinder, the handle and the internal mechanism, and the cause is often something small: a door that has dropped, or a fitting that has worked loose. Many failed-mechanism call-outs follow weeks of exactly this, until the gearbox finally gives way, sometimes with the door locked shut and impossible to open.

The cost climbs at each stage. An alignment adjustment is the least expensive outcome. A replacement mechanism costs considerably more. An emergency visit to a jammed door, followed by a new mechanism, costs most of all. So stop using the lock if the key starts to bend, the handle comes loose or the door will no longer secure, and get the cause looked at while it is still a small job. If you are already shut out, go to locked out or our emergency locksmith page.

What affects the cost?

Service required, time of attendance, lock and door type, labour and parts.

Repair or Replace: Which Do You Actually Need?

Repair usually makes sense for alignment faults, worn latches, loose handles, stiff cylinders and a single failed part on an otherwise sound door. Replacement is usually the better call when the lock is obsolete and parts are no longer made, when the door has been forced, when keys are unaccounted for, or when your insurer has asked for a particular standard. A good locksmith does not replace a lock that only needs adjusting. The full comparison is in lock repair or replacement, which do you need, and part changes are covered on lock replacement in Runcorn.

Timing matters too. Plenty of repairs can wait for a booked slot, but some cannot: a door that will not lock or secure, a lock or entrance damaged in an attempted break-in, a broken key stopping you getting in or locking up, or a door stuck open. Those need help straight away, so call rather than book.

What Affects the Cost of a Lock Repair

What you pay depends on the fault, the type of lock and door, and how much work is involved. Some doors need only an adjustment; a damaged part may need repairing or swapping. The main factors are:

An adjustment is normally the least expensive way to fix a lock problem. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether a lock repair starting price, VAT-inclusive and scoped to the job and hours, can be published]

Describe the fault on the phone and you get a price on that call; if what the technician finds changes it, you hear why before any work begins. A technician arriving is never billed. You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged. Frequently Asked Questions

Can you repair a lock that has been forced or damaged in a break-in?

Often, depending on the damage. After an attempted break-in the lock, door and frame all need checking, because the strain rarely stays in the lock. If the lock cannot be saved, it can be replaced. If the door will not secure, call now;.

My uPVC door handle is getting harder to lift. Is that urgent?

Act on it soon. A handle that keeps getting stiffer usually means the multipoint mechanism is being forced against keeps that no longer line up, and each push adds strain to the gearbox. Caught early it is often an adjustment; left, it can end with a failed gearbox and a door that will not open.

How do I know if it is the lock or the door?

Open the door and try the lock gently while it stands open. If it works more easily, the door's alignment, hinges or keeps are the likely cause. If it still fails, the fault is probably in the cylinder, latch or internal mechanism.

My key is stiff. Should I use WD40?

Not as a lubricant. WD40 cleans and displaces water rather than lubricating for long, and it can draw dirt into the cylinder. A dry graphite lubricant suits a lock cylinder better. If the key is still stiff afterwards, do not force it; get the lock checked.

Can a door lock be repaired, or does it always need replacing?

Whether a repair works depends on the fault, the condition of the parts and whether suitable spares exist. Often the door needs only an alignment adjustment or one component repaired or replaced. A complete new lock is needed when the existing one is badly damaged or no longer suitable.

Do you repair doors as well as locks?

Yes. Many lock problems are really door problems. The work includes adjusting hinges, including uPVC flag hinges, repositioning keep plates so the locking points meet, replacing worn hinges, and refitting handles and spindles.

How much does a lock repair cost in Runcorn?

It depends on whether the job is an adjustment or a part replacement, which component has failed, the door type and the time of day. An adjustment is normally the least expensive outcome. There is no call-out charge, and you hear the price before work starts. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: publishable lock repair starting price]

Should I call a locksmith, a carpenter or a handyman?

A locksmith for anything involving the lock, the mechanism or how the door engages with its frame. A carpenter or handyman can rehang a door, but is not usually set up to diagnose a multipoint mechanism or match its parts. When you call, describe the property, the door and the fault.
